Remote Reboots

Colostore uses remote reboot units to distribute power through out the datacenter, which gives our clients the ability through their online control panel to reboot any of their collocated devices or dedicated servers through out the datacenter. If you are planning on collocating a server with Colostore there are a few things you may need to keep in mind and prepare for before sending in your server. A remote reboot unit works by power cycling the power connection to a server, in effect it would be the same as unplugging the power chord, waiting 3 seconds and the plugging it back in. A server needs to be able to start up when power is available to it so when the power is cycled it will start up. The feature that allows this to happen is generally found in the BIOS of a server, usually under the power options. It is usually an option that allow the server to boot when .power available. or restore power from last setting. However, the BIOS lists the method before sending in a system it is always a good idea to test this out at your location first by unplugging the system while it is powered on, waiting several seconds and then plugging it back in. If the system starts up then your ready to have the system on the remote reboot network.

In some cases a system will have two power supplies which can present some issue, mainly you simply cannot power cycle both power sources simultaneously. In the event you do have two power sources on your server you can either install a Y-adapter to split power to your power supplies, or you can upgrade to have another power feed to your server. If you upgrade to another power feed your server would be running from separate uninterruptible power supplies as well as separate power distribution units, which will provide an increase in redundancy. The system would then be able to simultaneously reboot the system by remotely rebooting both power distribution units at the same time.
